Dear NU High School Board,
I believe that "The Catcher in the Rye" should be taught to the students at NU High. They said that one of the reasons the book was banned was because of drinking. When in the book Holden feels very sick, and depressed while he drinks. This is showing that drinking is not a good thing because it will make you feel bad. You can find this part in chapter 20 pages 151-153.
Another reason people said this book should be banned is because they talk about sex a lot. When really Holden's thoughts on sex are not that bad. On page 62 Holden says that he tries to set rules for himself, and he tries to be respectful to women. He says that you should like a girl for her face. I believe that many people out there have worse thoughts about sex then Holden.
People say that the book should be banned because Holden is anti-religion. When Holden says he likes Jesus and All. Also he tries to pray occasionally. I think that Holden is just confused about what he wants. In conclusion I believe that "The Catcher in the Rye" should be taught to students at NU High.

  1. Well done, Eric. You use all three elements of effective arguments discussed in class. I think your argument about drinking could be made even stronger if you pull out specific scenes and quotes from the book like you did in your 2nd and 3rd topic, instead of just providing the page number.
